Rae Greulich became a Patient Safety Advocate following the death of her husband, Dan, who suffered multiple hospital-acquired infections after admission to a major teaching hospital. Dan died from septic shock due to extremely delayed treatment of infections, after seven months in the ICU. His story became the subject of a nationally recognized, Reuters in-depth investigation “The Uncounted: The Deadly Epidemic America is Ignoring.” Rae became active with the Consumers Union Safe Patient Project, working to improve the Medical Board of California and began volunteering with the Alliance for Safety Awareness for Patients (ASAP) assisting at hospital presentations and with educational social media projects.

In 2013, Rae was appointed as a voting member on the CA Dept. of Public Health’s HAI Advisory Committee where she participated on the Public Reporting and Education subcommittee.  She serves on UCLA’s Infection Prevention Committee and UCLA’s Patient and Family Advisory Committee.

In 2015, Rae became co-administrator of the PSAN Facebook group “Tell Us About Your Infection”. The project is a public place to report infections transmitted in healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, or following visits to a doctor, dentist or any medical encounter. The goal is to inform and educate the public about occurrence so that people can take measures to protect themselves. Rae constructed and maintains the PSAN website.
