What type of medical harm did you experience or witness? Combination of Above or “Other”. Please explain.
Please describe what happened. While in the ICU at the hospital being treated after surgery following a bad accident a compound complex open wound fracture of my ankle, the nursing treatment I received was not only sub-par, but contributed to my pain and distress through the inappropriate use of two medical appliances. The nurses on duty used them for their own comfort and benefit and not mine. The removal of one of the appliances resulted in the ripping off of a portion of my very sensitive skin around the anal area. Misdiagnosis — or at the very least a lack of understanding of medication side effects — contributed to my discomfort. As did misinterpretation of my symptoms. I tried to explain but was ignored or hushed up — mostly ignored. Things got better when I left ICU for the general population ward. I will never forget and will never recommend that University affiliated hospital to any one. My surgeon was wonderful. It was the nursing staff which fell so very short of the minimum standards of care.
What was the outcome of the medical harm issue? Minor injury
